Bathymetry: the measurement of depth of water in oceans or lakes. It involves mapping the underwater topography and features, such as mountains, valleys, ridges, and plateaus, that are beneath the water’s surface.
I’ve had an idea brewing in my mind for months—something special for wall art. I wanted to create a large bathymetric map of Lake Ontario, where the mighty Kings roam. In the laser crafting world, bathymetric maps are often made with several layers of wood, each representing different depths of the lake. These layers are painted in varying shades of blue to show the depth contours.
As I spent more time thinking about this idea, I realized, “Shawn, this is an old technique. You have a new method at your disposal!” And that new method was using a UV DTF sticker to represent the bathymetry. The results were amazing—far beyond what I could have achieved with paint.
Next on my wish list was a bold display of “LAKE ONTARIO” in large capital letters. I cut these out of 3/4″ pine using the laser, and they turned out beautifully. To complete the piece, I added our team name cut from acrylic, the Harvest Time Sportfishing logo also in acrylic, an engraved boat design on birch with an acrylic backer, a rosewood compass cut from birch, and a tiny house to symbolize our location in relation to the vast lake.
