Gone are the days of flimsy cardboard puzzles—laser-cut puzzles bring craftsmanship and creativity to your fingertips.
One morning, while tinkering in my hobby house, I was introducing my daughter-in-law, Rachel, to the power of my laser cutter. We made a door sign for my granddaughter and chatted about other crafting possibilities. Rachel casually mentioned how neat it would be to create a puzzle for her son. Challenge accepted!
I dove into my resources, and within about 30 minutes, I had a photo selected and a puzzle design ready to go. Or how big should each piece be?
For the material, I chose 1/8-inch birch plywood. It’s durable, won’t bend or get “dog ears,” and can withstand little hands. Using a high-quality photo, I transferred the image onto the plywood and placed it in the laser cutter, which swiftly carved out the puzzle pieces. The process was quick, seamless, and, honestly, pretty fascinating.
But then I realized I’d overlooked something—how would the puzzle pieces be stored? Plus, the kids would need a reference picture to assemble it. Back to my resources! I found files for laser-cut, finger-joint boxes. I decided on an 8″x8″x2″ sliding box design, and it turned out to be the cutest little storage solution for the puzzle.
The Test: My grandson Bodie’s 3rd birthday party was the perfect opportunity to unveil the puzzle. For this one, I used a photo of him and his two siblings on the outdoor rink—something I knew would capture his interest. Once the gifts were opened and the chaos settled, the kids gathered around a table to assemble the puzzle.
I was over the moon watching their excitement. Whether contributing pieces or just observing, they were all captivated. It hit me then—puzzles are universally fun, no matter your age. They’re both entertaining and challenging, making them a timeless activity.
